I heard my little sister getting up in the middle of the night ... again. It was 1993, and we had been keeping her two sons in Arizona during the school year. She visited us at least once a month, if not more often, so these nighttime rituals had become familiar. She just took it for granted that she would get up every hour or so to pee, so we took it for granted, too.
It's funny. We are only 18 months apart in age, but she was always my "little" sister and I was always the "big" sister. You know how it is, if you have any brothers or sisters. I was the caretaker, the perfectionistic older one. My little sister was the life of the party, never complaining, always making everyone laugh, even when she was crying inside. What we didn't know was that she had been living like this for 10 years, using the bathroom up to 60 times a day and night, in pain but never complaining.
In 1993, few people had heard of interstitial cystitis, so her diagnosis came as a complete surprise when she ended up at Scripps in San Diego for an entirely different medical issue. Shortly after that, she attended a natural health trade show in California, seeking a cure for this new label, IC. At every booth, she asked, "Do you think your product will help my IC?" The answer was always, "What's IC?"
It was then that she became determined to get better, no matter what it took. In that experimentation, she tried aloe vera. At that time, the aloe vera capsules contained a lot more of the fiber that occurs naturally in the aloe plant. It made them cheaper to make and easier to sell on the shelves of a health food store. She took 21 capsules that first day and slept through the night for the first time in 10 years. She asked to join our company, and we worked to make an aloe vera supplement that would be more concentrated.
It took some experimentation, but we were able to remove 100% of the insoluble fiber in the freeze-drying process, along with all of the anthraquinones (the latex chemicals that cause diarrhea), so a typical therapeutic dose was down to 6 capsules per day. We then conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in IC patients. Five years later, my sister moved on with her own business, and we trademarked Desert Harvest for the IC/PBS market.
We have now worked with more than 50,000 IC/PBS sufferers, but my little sister was our very first patient and continues to be the inspiration for our commitment to help people in more than 42 countries who suffer from the life-changing symptoms of IC/PBS, chronic pelvic pain, and nonbacterial prostatitis. Over the years, we have expanded our product line and the types of problems we address, but we will always have a place in our hearts for those with IC.
